Recently I had one of the greatest honors in my photography career. Getting to photograph one of my siblings engagement sessions. My youngest brother Karsten and his fiance Cortnee chose to have their engagement session in a historic city on the east coast. While it was a few hours away from Johnson City, TN, I was happy to make the drive. This was my first time photographing a family member in this context, but it went off without a hitch.

We started out at their future venue. The weather was overcast (we even got a little bit of rain at first) but they were good sports about it!

The other side of the venue has a completely different look to it. It changes from an upscale look to a more tropical look. Despite the rain coming down nothing could dampen their spirits, or their love for each other. I can’t wait to see them get married here!

After finishing at their venue, we moved into the city. By this time the rain had stopped but the sun was still behind the clouds. Contrary to popular belief, many times a cloudy day can actually work out for the best in a photo session. It keeps things cool, and more importantly it blocks out the midday sun and helps control harsh shadows. Don’t they look so cute up against the pillar?!

After a much needed break for lunch, we hit some of the more well known parts of the city. The stops included an extremely overpriced candy shop, a very unique fountain, a famous bridge, and a row of colorful houses.

I absolutely love this city. It is very historic and has beauty that is hard to match. Here are a few more of my favorite shots from the session!

As the sun started to go down, we knew it was time to hit the road to get some sunset shots. But I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to create a few “low in the sky” sunstars before we left.

Finally, we made it to a nearby beach just in time for some of the most epic sunset shots I’ve ever experienced. These things truly came out amazing!

Congratulations to my youngest brother Karsten and his fiance Cortnee! Here’s to ending a chapter in your lives and starting a brand new, much more exciting one! I was so honored to be a part of this special moment, and I can’t wait to walk alongside you guys in the journey that is still to come.
